NEWEST TRENDS FROM COUNTER CULTURE @REDKEN EXCHANGE IN NYC
Staying current and learning the newest trends and advances in hair care set us apart from other stylists and keep our clients looking fresh. That is why Beaucage stylists’ Matt LeFevre and Kelli Rossetti jumped at the opportunity to participate in the Counter Culture @ Redken Exchange in NYC. Open only to advanced stylists, Redken’s Counter Culture workshop connects artists from around the globe and explores ways to create design, color and finishing using the latest trends and innovations.
We asked Matt and Kelli to share their thoughts on this unique training opportunity:
Q: What made you choose to study Counter Culture @Redken Exchange?
Matt: First and foremost, the opportunity to work with Redken artists’ Taichi Isobe and Jorge Joao. Taichi is a coloring expert with a unique approach to creating hair color that combines a creative edge with everyday wear. Jorge is a legend, the go-to-guy to lead a team of stylists backstage at fashion shows or when fashion and industry magazines want to know about the newest trends.
Kelli: Education is really important to me and I am always looking to challenge myself and learn new techniques so working with international artists at Redken’s state of the art facilities in New York City was a huge opportunity!
Q: Counter Culture seems a bit edgy for Boston. Did you find it relevant for your existing clients?
Kelli: The workshop focused on asymmetry and the art of disconnection which sounds edgy, but these techniques can be modified to use on our clients who want a fabulous everyday haircut. For example, Taichi taught us color techniques using wild colors. We can tone down the colors and use the patterns for a rich, vibrant look that any of my clients would love.

Disconnection
Matt: I agree. We learned about new up styling techniques used on the runway during fashion week, but we also learned how to do a bridal application with a twist.
Q: What are the newest color trends?
Kelli: Reds. Reds are huge in all shades, browns and golden browns.

Reds
Matt: Creating flashlights and splashlights of color using new patterns for foil placements.

Spashlights
Q: If you had to say what your number 1 take-away was from this experience, what would it be.
Matt: Hmmm. That is a tough one, but I would have to say the cutting techniques were simply a fantastic part of the class, specifically the art of using disconnection to create layers and movement with many of the current styles.
Kelli: I agree. I also felt the texturizing techniques were cutting edge. I have been texturizing hair for 16 years but learned about using my wrist to create new, fabulous affects.
